Hugging a corner of a forested natural area in West Portland, this project already had some fantastic bones when it came to vegetation. We wanted to honor the surrounding forest by filling in the shady understory with the bold textures and bright greens of Pacific Northwest natives and using local juniper, boulders and crushed rock for a soft sensory experience.

In the sunny spots we created a hillside perennial meadow, added a rockery at the entry with loads of warm-hued vegetation, planted a no-mow lawn for the dogs, and built in a narrow veggie garden on deck that has grown some of the wiliest tomato plants we’ve ever seen!

Nestled up in the trees, the deck is central to the whole experience. An expansive, multi-level hub for all kinds of activities, lounging and taking in the wooded surroundings.
