johnson creek

A new home and chapter in the client’s lives leaned into shaping their community compound with garden spaces that embraced the adjacent properties and outdoor gatherings while buffering the noisy Johnson Creek Blvd. at its northern edge. A layered approach to screening with sheared redwood trees and a substantial granite boulder retaining wall provided the necessary protection/separation from the street while nestling the frontside of the home into a dynamic woodland garden. As you enter the property, the sound of the gravel driveway grounds you in the space as you’re taken by the striking sculptural quality of the specimen trees complimenting the contemporary architecture.

While the primary planting design emphasized a native palette with layered seasonal texture, the clients key desire was to have a lush cutting garden in the central courtyard. The robust cutting garden creates a gorgeous live art installation as every room looks out onto the subtle shifts year round. It’s an artful celebration to experience from within the garden and viewing from the comforts of the indoors on a cold Northwest day.  The landscape and building architecture were developed in stride, and you can feel the ease of transitions as you move through the ‘rooms’ of the property (interior and exterior alike).
